OUT OF AND IN FOCUS
A Jewish Film History of West Germany
The Jewish film history of the Federal Republic of Germany remains largely undocumented. However, it is now being explored in the comprehensive exhibition titled OUT OF AND IN FOCUS: A Jewish Film History of West Germany at the Jewish Museum Frankfurt, running until January 14, 2024.
This exhibition focuses on the multifaceted and often contradictory lives and careers of Jewish producers, directors, and actors who made significant contributions to film production between 1945 and 1989. It traces their stories through exemplary films that shed light on the historical and social contexts of the time. By uncovering this previously unwritten film history and addressing its notable gaps, the exhibition offers fresh perspectives on one of the most influential media of the 20th century and its significance within the Federal Republic of Germany. The research for this exhibition has been conducted by film scholars Lea Wohl von Haselberg and Johannes Praetorius-Rhein.

Gedreht in Israel nach einer Erzählung von Abraham B. Jehoschua, erzählt der Film von einem Dichter, der mit seinem geistig behinderten Sohn zurückgezogen am Stadtrand von Tel Aviv lebt. Der Sohn dient dem Vater als willkommenes Alibi dafür, nicht mehr zu schreiben. DAS SCHWEIGEN DES DICHTERS ist eine bewegende Studie über Resignation und wie man dagegen ankämpfen kann. Lilienthal: „In einer Welt, wo die Sprache immer mehr zu Schlagzeilen verkommt, wo das Geheimnis von Bildern durch die allgegenwärtigen Medien zerstört wird, sehe ich im Schwachsinn und im Schweigen, (…) eine Art Widerstand.“
