Satyajit Ray (1922–1992) was the first director from India to gain global recognition. Equally gifted as a graphic artist, musician, writer, and director, Ray created a body of work that transcends all boundaries: those of genres and arts as well as cultures. In the Lecture & Film series “An Eye for the World: The Cinema of Satyajit Ray,” experts explore what continues to make Ray’s work groundbreaking.

Der letzte Teil von Rays Apu-Filmtrilogie zeigt den titelgebenden Protagonisten als jungen Erwachsenen, der nach dem Studienabschluss in Kolkata unter ärmlichen Verhältnissen lebt und dort versucht, Schriftsteller zu werden. Über einen Freund lernt er die junge Aparna kennen und eine Verkettung von Zufällen führt dazu, dass sich die beiden näherkommen. „APUR SANSAR [...] zeichnet ein Bild häuslichen Glücks inmitten wirtschaftlicher Not. Zugleich verwandelt sich der Reichtum der Natur aus den ersten beiden Filmen hier in ein Gefühl von Ödnis. Zu verstehen ist diese doppelte Spannung auch vor dem Hintergrund der Entstehung einer neuen Form des Melodramas in den 1950er Jahren.“ (Moinak Biswas)
