NEW VOICES. GERMAN CINEMA SINCE 2000
A Special Exhibition on the Multifaceted and Diverse Filmmaking in Germany since 2000.
June 19, 2024 – February 23, 2025
The films tell stories of melancholic girls, laid-back teachers, and fathers in disguise. Starting in June 2024, the DFF will present a special exhibition showcasing the multifaceted and culturally diverse landscape of German filmmaking since the turn of the millennium. The exhibition will explore what defines contemporary German film, the issues it brings to the fore, the voices it amplifies, and what it reveals about identity, culture, and life in Germany in the digital age and a post-migrant society.
Selected works and filmmakers will be highlighted, with exhibits from the DFF’s collections and loans from the filmmakers themselves. Visitors will encounter the plush rabbit without ears and the eerie Nachtmahr, gain insight into the interplay of commerce, art, and film festivals, and rediscover cherished and humorous memories.
THE EXHIBITION
Since the year 2000, more than 3,000 German films have been released in theaters. They cover a wide range of topics and utilize various styles and aesthetic techniques. This exhibition presents exceptional works that embody artistic innovation, cinematic skill, and the rich thematic tapestry of stories told in Germany. It invites viewers to immerse themselves in the landscape of German cinema since 2000 and to discover the voices that have left an indelible mark.
Within the exhibition space, visitors will encounter cinematic gems ranging from the distinguished creations of established luminaries such as Caroline Link to the promising endeavors of emerging talents such as Marina Prados and Paula Knüpling. Throughout, the emphasis is on celebrating the cultural and thematic diversity that has been a cornerstone of German filmmaking since the turn of the millennium.
BEGLEITPROGRAMM
A comprehensive film series on German filmmaking since 2000 will run concurrently with the exhibition in the DFF cinema, offering insights into the many facets of the German cinematic landscape.
CONSTELLATIONS
In the Constellations digital experience, you’ll encounter selected objects from the exhibition. These objects open up a world of intriguing connections to additional objects in the exhibition, DFF’s archives and collections and its project partners in the virtual world. Guided by storylines, you’ll discover new and surprising constellations that extend far beyond the physical boundaries of the DFF’s exhibition spaces.
