The 30th edition of the festival takes place from 1 – 27 February 2024.

The Africa Alive Festival brings contemporary African culture to Frankfurt with film programs, concerts, readings, exhibitions, children’s and youth events and political podiums. As a unique collaboration of committed private individuals, Frankfurt cultural institutions, initiatives and associations, the series of events aims to promote a lively dialogue between cultures in order to reduce prejudices and enrich a multicultural Frankfurt. In 1996, UNESCO declared Africa Alive a project of the World Decade for Cultural Development. In 2001, the festival became the official German contribution to the UN Year of Dialogue between Cultures. In 2002 and 2003 it was under the patronage of the German section of UNESCO. Since 2003 Africa Alive is a member of the Association of Hessian Film Festivals.

Since the Deutsches Filmmuseum presented fourteen new African films at the first Africa Alive Festival in 1995, the program has steadily expanded, offering African artists a forum to present their work on the European continent, where African films, literature and culture are still little known, especially in Germany.

With a steadily growing audience, Africa Alive shows almost all films in the original version with German or English subtitles and sets a different thematic or country focus each year.
